"One night I overheard **my wife on the phone checking a reference for someone who had applied to fill a vacancy in nursing management. I was surprised to hear her say, “Yes, but is she fun?** You know, F-U-N. Is she any fun?”
"When she ended the conversation I asked in mock surprise, “Fun? Since when is that a requirement to be a nurse manager?”
“**Well, what do you call it when you’re always glad to see someone**. Someone who lights up everybody’s day. A manager who everybody hugs when she gets back from vacation? A person who makes people around her feel happy?”
“I guess I have always called that a ‘positive attitude,’ “ I said.
“Well, how weak is that!” she exclaimed. “**Everyone has a so-called positive attitude, but not everybody is fun**. I need a nursing team who like each other and have fun together. Heaven knows their jobs are hard enough without having to deal with moody managers. A positive attitude is not good enough.”
